We will provide regular updates on our construction schedule and the affected streets on the SURE project website at www.ngupgrade.com

Please pay attention to the following information

This is the 72-hour DigSafe notice as described below. Please call the project hotline at 866-821-4386 if you need to discuss the location of any privately-owned underground pipes, wires or other facilities on your property. If you are a Unitil customer, additional contact will be made with you to coordinate any service interruption and the possible re-location of piping and/or meters.

Property owner responsibility for private underground facilities

In the area where construction will be taking place there will be colored paint marks on the ground indicating the location of underground utilities. In compliance with state DigSafe laws, it is required that property owners indicate the location of privately-owned underground facilities on their property (including private water, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber optic lines, sprinklers, dog fences, and wires for light posts and signs) within 72 hours of receiving this notice. In the case of sewer service lines, property owners are responsible for indicating the location of the line all the way to the connection with the sewer main in the street. For more information, please visit the Maine Public Utilities Commission website at www.maine.gov/mpuc and click the link in the right-hand column for “Underground Damage Prevention Program.”

Service interruptions and re-lighting appliances

If you are presently a Unitil customer, there will be a temporary interruption in your service while you are connected to the new gas main.  An additional notice from Unitil will be left regarding the anticipated date of the service interruption.   It is not necessary for you to be at home during the day while this work is being done from the street to the outside of the building.  However, after your service is interrupted, Unitil will need access to your residence or business once the work is completed because one of the company’s technicians will have to re-light the pilot lights on all of your gas appliances and check your system. Unitil will schedule this directly with you.  The Unitil 24-hour call center can also be reached at 866-900-4460 anytime to dispatch a service person to re-activate your gas service.

04/05/2016 - UNITIL CONTINUES GAS SYSTEM UPGRADES AS CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN APRIL

Modernization project reaches milestone in effort to improve reliability and meet growing demand for gas

PORTLAND, ME, April 5, 2016 – Unitil, (www.unitil.com), a provider of natural gas and electricity to customers in New England, will soon begin construction on the next phase of its System Upgrade for Reliable Energy (SURE) project in two Portland areas. This marks the sixth year of the Unitil SURE project, a 14-year initiative to modernize the Portland area's gas infrastructure, making it more reliable and better able to meet the growing demand for natural gas in Maine.

The initial work for 2016 is scheduled to begin on or about April 18 on Allen Avenue, from Washington Ave to Racine Ave. Construction will begin in downtown Portland mid-summer in the areas of Park, High, Danforth, Pleasant, Center, Free, and York Streets. Approximately 2.73 miles of main will be replaced and 1.3 miles of existing main will be uprated by early fall. The improvements will impact 575 customers. The completion of work on Allen Avenue will represent a major milestone in the SURE project as it will mean the entire Northeast portion of Portland will have been upgraded.

“Unitil has made considerable progress in updating our natural gas system, due in large part to the support and patience of residents and businesses in our construction areas,” said Matt Doughty, project manager, Unitil. “Our priority continues to focus on safely upgrading the infrastructure in a timely manner with as little impact to customers as possible.”

Minor traffic delays are expected in the mixed residential and commercial areas as the project progresses. Both local and commuting traffic will be maintained efficiently throughout the project. The Downtown Portland work will occur ahead of City and DOT repaving projects. New England Utility Constructors (NEUCO) is the contractor for the SURE Project.

Unitil was recognized by the American Gas Association in 2015 for having best practices within the communities it serves, specifically for its management of contractors and effectiveness in aggressively replacing aging cast iron pipes in a cost effective and efficient manner through the SURE project.

Unitil completed SURE project construction and excavation work in the Portland area on schedule in 2015, with more than nine miles of gas main being replacing or uprated to higher pressure. This includes over 2,500 feet of new 8" gas main installed along Spring Street in conjunction with the City of Portland's street-scaping project. Also included is nearly 11,000 feet of new 8” gas main along Allen and Washington Ave in advance of city paving projects. Approximately 500 customers were upgraded during the course of construction.

Due to the construction work in Portland, Unitil will be able to offer natural gas service to new customers who live near the existing pipeline. Residents and businesses in the neighborhood who are interested in switching to natural gas should call Unitil today at 1-888-4-UNITIL, or fill out an online form.

For the latest information about the SURE project and construction schedules, please visit www.ngupgrade.com or call Unitil’s toll-free hotline 1-866-821-4386.

04/13/2015 - Informational meeting for Unitil SURE project to take place on 4/14

To learn more about the Unitil SURE project and its impact on the Washington Avenue and Allen Avenue neighborhoods, please join representatives from Unitil and NEUCO for an informational meeting on Tuesday, April 14th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Casco Bay High School (196 Allen Ave) in Room 250.

04/08/2015 - Unitil Continues Natural Gas System Upgrades in Portland

Unitil is entering the next phase of its System Upgrade for Reliable Energy (SURE) project and is scheduled to complete work along busy city streets and thoroughfares. The Unitil SURE project, a 14-year project now in year five, is modernizing the Portland area's gas infrastructure, making it more reliable and better able to meet the growing demand for natural gas in Maine.

Replacement of the gas mains and service lines along Allen Avenue, Deering Street and Temple Street, and the installation of a new intermediate pressure main on Washington Avenue, begins on or about April 13. The Washington Avenue, Allen Avenue and Deering Street projects are expected to take two to three months to complete; the Temple Street project should be completed in about two weeks.  On-street parking will be impacted in the construction zones and the projects may cause traffic delays, although two-way traffic will be maintained most of the time.  Traffic on Deering Street will be one-way and/or alternating.   Home and business owners will always have access to their properties.

Unitil is committed to minimizing disruptions to local residents, businesses and commuters as it upgrades the energy infrastructure in the area. Safety is Unitil’s first priority, but the company will work quickly and efficiently to complete work with as little inconvenience as possible to residents and commuters.

Unitil completed SURE project construction and excavation work in Portland’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood on schedule last year. In 2014, Unitil replaced more than 2 miles of cast iron pipe with state-of-the art, high-density plastic pipe, and an additional 1.7 miles were upgraded to allow the system to operate at a higher pressure, modernizing the local infrastructure. Construction also included the addition of 0.3 miles of unprotected steel main pipes in South Portland and upgrades to more than 12 pressure limiting valves along Unitil’s distribution system. In four years, Unitil has completed 30 percent of the SURE project, including all planned work in Westbrook.

Crews also have been busy in Westbrook, installing new mains and service lines in the neighborhood between Church St. and Mechanic St. Starting the week of June 10, we will be working on Main St., between Harnois Ave. and Bridge St. Due to traffic volumes, some of this work will take place at night. On-street parking also will be impacted, but residents and businesses will always have access to their properties.
